FIRST® LEGO® League Open European Championship 2017 is organised by FIRST Scandinavia in cooperation with The City of Aarhus, Aarhus University, Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering and it-forum.

The City of Aarhus

Think of Aarhus as a major city crammed into a mega village. Being a university city, Aarhus is the youngest in Denmark measured by average age, but historically one of the oldest. Thus, the atmosphere is a vibrant mix of youthful energy and blasts from the past.

Aarhus is a dynamic city in Denmark. From here, beach, harbour and forest are all within reach of a 15-minute bike ride. 330.000 people live in Aarhus – and more than 50.000 of them are students.

Each year, the higher educational institutions in Aarhus attract more and more young people to the city. Having the leaders and employees of tomorrow studying in Aarhus today makes the city interesting for business’ and investments – especially within food, ict, health, cleantech and creative industries.

In Aarhus, nature is present everywhere. Forests and beaches surround the city, and inside the city itself, there are lots of parks and small natural oases.
Aarhus is the European Capital of Culture in 2017 and will host many unique cultural events during the year.

Aarhus University

The university was founded in 1928 and today it has several world class research fields.

Aarhus University (AU) is a top ten university among universities founded within the past 100 years. It has a long tradition of partnerships with some of the world’s best research institutions and university networks.

AU has a strong commitment to the development of society that is realised through its collaboration with government agencies and institutions and the business community.

The university has 45,000 students; a little more than half enrolled as bachelor students. A tenth of these students are international, with over 100 nationalities represented. The university employs approximately 11,500 academic and administrative members of staff.

The university’s goal is to contribute towards solving the complex global challenges facing the world. The university therefore strives to combine the high level of academic standards of its researchers with collaboration across disciplinary boundaries to combine research in new ways.

This takes place in close contact with the world around us and creates the basis for the university to be internationally competitive within the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange.

Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering

Since its establishment in 1896 Aarhus School of Marine and Technical Engineering has been an integral part of life in Aarhus. Merely a stone’s throw from the vibrant city centre the school is situated on the waterfront of Aarhus within easy reach of the port of Aarhus, our numerous industry partners and local educational institutions. We are the largest Marine Engineering School in Denmark with approximately 1,000 students attending our 4½ year Bachelor Programme.

We take great pride in our high educational standards, our accredited status and our dynamic learning environment. We value our close connection with our students and continually support an array of social activities for both students and staff.

It-forum

It-forum is a membership based network for more than 470 companies from private and public organizations, colleges, and local, regional and state authorities in Region Midtjylland and Southern Denmark.

We represent in total close to 20.000 IT people in all positions from CEOs to programmers.

Our members share an interest in adopting smart ICT technologies for innovating purposes and in order to improve their businesses.

The it-forum headquarter is based in the heart of the Aarhus University campus, IT research, and innovation center. From the headquarter and its nine local offices around the region of Middle Jutland and Souther Denmark, it-forumis close to the cluster of members and all local authorities in the major cities in the region.

The main activities are bi-weekly seminars and conference venues for the members, intra member networking and information stream. Annually app. 2,500 people attend it-forum seminars.

FIRST Scandinavia

Our purpose is to give children and young people good training and empowering experiences with the technical and natural sciences, and thereby contribute to more pupils choosing a scientific education. Our desire is to give children and youths a good learning experience with technology and science.

The FIRST Scandinavia foundation has since 2000 developed and implemented concepts and projects in the sciences for over 200,000 children and young people. FIRST® LEGO® League Scandinavia and Newton are our two largest and most important concepts, where we have ongoing projects in 65 cities.

In addition to our activities in Scandinavia, we have been involved in implementing and organizing events, developing projects and conducting training of teachers and organizations in countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Turkey, Greenland, Lithuania, Iceland, Russia and several other countries in Central Europe.

Without the kind and generous support from our sponsors and business partners we would not be able to organise FIRST® LEGO® League Open European Championship 2017.

A giant thanks to you all!

Architecture and Energy

The star shaped building is designed by the Danish architecture firm Kjær & Richter in collaboration with Christensen & Co architects.

The building employs multiple innovative energy solutions, and functions as a 1:1 living lab where researchers and students can access the construction, energy systems and cooling- and ventilation systems.

Navitas is an international epicenter for energy technology and is build by the highest standards of energy consumption- and savings. The building meets the principals of integrated energy design, which means that the building is constantly adjusting the energy consumption levels to fit the need of the users. An intelligent system regulates oxygen- and light levels to ensure the optimal indoor environment.

On top of Navitas sits 1280 solar cells supplying the building with energy. In the lower floors sits a water-cooling system that utilizes seawater to cool the building when needed.
